This appeared to be a smart upmarket restaurant - which is reflected in the decor and surroundings. However, the service was lacklustre with the waiter forgetting our wine order within seconds of us placing it! The promise in the menu was that the steak tartare would be prepared at our table but it was not, The food was the most disappointing aspect of our meal, with everything over seasoned and over salted. Our tuna tartare starter was overwhelmed by the soy sauce and other seasoning which dominated the dish, so that we could not appreciate the subtle flavour of the tuna.

Our first meal here was good. So we came back, what a mistake the meat was raw, fish yuck and the service disappointing. I am hoping the spring break crowds impacted quality. But it was not a good experience.

A place where more attention is paid to the Spanish than to the tourists. The courtesy shown to the Spanish who ordered calamari and cola was not shown to us who ordered oysters and quality wine for some reason.

We came here for the paella and we were so happy we did! Lobster paella was delicious and more than enough for two people. Exactly what we wanted for an authentic experience in Madrid. We also had amazing tender and slightly deliciously salty artichoke flowers and a tomato tartar. The service was very attentive and friendly.

The food was delicious especially the sardines with tomatoes and avocado appetizer. Great entrees included the roasted chicken and the squid. The service and ambience were excellent. We look forward to returning to this beautiful restaurant on our next trip to Madrid.

Everything was great, only one thing what was not nice, the waiter tried to sell, very hard, to us as many bottles of water as possible, filling the water glasses to the top every time, which seemed like a very cheap and flashy way to make as much money as possible on us.

The waiting staff were awesomely attentive. The paella was absolutely delicious. The vibe was 'expensive restaurant' with a big dash of 'our customers are important and we want to please them'. Loved it and will definitely return.

We have been to this El Barril (de Cortes) several times. The food quality is generally excellent. The steak was a bit tough, though. We loved the fried whole sea bass with lime. All the other food was very good. The service is also very good but sometimes difficult to hail down a waiter. We will continue to go there especially with visiting relatives.

This is a tourist trap, nothing more nothing less. Paella was saltless, they offered that I try a dry wine to see if I liked it and then poured a whole fruity wine for me to drink. They charged EUR 5.75 (sic.) for old bread.
