Behind a hidden door off the square with no signage, are two long steep sets of dark, narrow, winding shallow stone stairs that lead to a small nondescript but centuries old room that seats 20 and offers 3 different tasting menus. The main star of each dish was usually wonderful, but each came with an odd flavor or spice, a weird-tasting leaf or herb, or some other addition that just missed the mark. Too much uniqueness for their own good and too much over-zeal to appeal tempt diners to return. One roll was stale and cold, and the other big great looking bread was cut into quarters and overly-salty and -seasoned, with something distasteful inside. First restaurant rolls I did not want to eat much less devour. In short, everything was ALMOST wonderful. That, taken with no humor or lightness, made for a pretty staid restaurant with no personality.

A unique experience. Only 7 tables with a chef and 1 front of house person. Excellent food and very friendly service.

Not just a meal but a whole experience! From entering the old building and climbing the steep stone stairs, to the restaurant overlooking the square and the fountain - everything was memorable. The chef/patron was obviously passionate about the food that he cooks and serves. He told us about the history of the restaurant and talked us through each course of the tasting menu that we had chosen. We enjoyed every morsel - enhanced by the explanations! This wasn't a cheap meal but we felt that it was excellent value (and despite being a tasting menu, we didn't leave feeling at all hungry). If ever we return to Lyon we will be back!

Tiny restaurant run by the 2 chefs with a fixed menu. The chef spends time at each table explaining the dishes and getting to know the guests. Each course was thoughtfully prepared and wonderful. Layers of flavors. The Veal dish was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend booking a reservation.

Everything about this place is absolute perfection. Loved it! The atmosphere, the food especially, the service, and the wines. I don’t have enough superlatives.

A charming restaurant with wonderful food. All run by the owner/chef and one assistant. Only one warning: 2 flights of steep steps to get there..

What a unique restaurant: marvelous food, served by the gifted and knowledgeable chef himself, with an incredible view from above of the museum of fine arts and city hall! From the lobster & caviar to the homemade chocolate, and great wine, a very memorable evening!

The food, the ambiance, the view, the service, the people are all reasons L’Etage is the best dining experience I have had in my life. My wife and I went there for our wedding anniversary and it was amazing. It is a very small restaurant, with a gorgeous view over the Batholdi Fountain. There are six tables inside, and two people working (the owner, who is front of house and serves) and the chef. It is so personable, and each dish is accompanied by explanation of its origins, the history of the dish, and recommendations as to how to enjoy best. The prices were exceptionally reasonable and we left quite full. I will leave my review short so as not to go on and on, but I could. I loved this restaurant and it was the highlight of our 8 day vacation in France. If you are reading this, please go, you will not regret it.

This is a nice place run by the chef/owner. The place is very cute and is quite small, only 6 tables. Our lunch was quite enjoyable.

Dinner in L’etage brings exceptional pleasure from all possible perspectives: creative and deliciously divine food, beautiful intimate interior and friendly staff around (mainly the chef and his colleague).

Amazing! Chef is so friendly.. he gave us history of the building and how he got started in the business and he was trained and even showed me photo of his new born son.. and the food? My wife was so happy with each dish that she can’t stopped compliment it! Chef is talented with blending different herb & spices ..

What an amazing place! The chef is passionate and friendly. We loved that he came to every table to talk and to show his ingredients. We fully recommend to go with the full menu; it's definitely worth it. I have a gluten intolerance and the chef was able to cater to my needs safely. Lovely wines as well. If there is one restaurant that you have to try in Lyon, it is this one!

We had a lovely and special evening at L'Etage. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The wine list was thoughtful and excellent. The service that Guillaume and his team provided was exceptional. We recommend L'Etage without reservation to anyone who is looking for a truly Lyonnaise dining experience!

It is located behind a grafittied door and a lonely halkway like a speakeasy. Lovely dining room. The owner/server/chef was lovely and full of information about the food, the history of the restaurant and lyon. The prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality of the food. I would highly recommend.

This is a charming, idiosyncratic restaurant. With only 5-6 tables, the service is highly personalised. We had the tasting menu -- there were some lovely discoveries. Well worth a visit.

Wow what a restaurant! Amazing cosy ambiance- the owner sacrifices quantity for quality which is very rare. There are few tables and service feels very personal. The food is exquisite! We certainly enjoyed every minute.

This was more than a meal, it was an exquisite experience. We had the 6 course prix fix meal and every course came with a story about the ingredients and how it was prepared. We also got a history of the square the restaurant overlooks from the owner/waiter. A wonderful evening.

Incredible restaurant experience! This tiny restaurant (6 tables) located on the second floor overlooking Place Terreaux is, in a word, magical. We selected this restaurant based on information on the website, as we had family visiting Lyon and wanted to give them an authentic French dining experience and show them the bustling neighborhood by Hotel de Ville. Once we located how to enter the restaurant (an experience of its own!), the winding staircase led us into the small, warm, cozy restaurant. There, the owner Guillaume, met us with a smile and showed us to our table, located by the window overlooking Place Terreaux. Guillaume was also our server, which was a surprise bonus. He explained the evening's menu in great detail, and just hearing him describe it made our mouths water. The set tasting menu was unique and bold, but still maintained quintessential French preparations and flavors. The caviar and scallops were sublime, the beef was perfectly cooked, and our tuna belly served over a squid ink cream sauce was other worldly. The fig and raspberry desserts were equally beautiful and luscious. Throughout the evening Guillaume explained the history of the building, Place Terreaux, French cooking, and how he came to acquire the restaurant (at the age of 20; he now only in his early 30s!). The flavors, textures and aesthetics of the food was exceptional, and the service was unmatched. Guillaume is obviously passionate. But he also has a profound sense of pride in what he has to offer, both with his food and his restaurant, and rightly so. We will return again and again, and continue to take our visitors there. It was an evening we will never forget.

A hidden away restaurant with wonderful Gallic ambience, great understated decor and with only six tables very intimate. The owner chef Guillame Mallet was a delight, very passionate about the food he produced from his little kitchen and he came to the table and explained each course. The food was a triumph. At the end of the meal he organised an Uber for us and escorted us across the square to flag in down. A really top guy.

    +1

It was perfect from start to finish. The salon was light and airy. Diners were not packed in and there was plenty of space between tables. It almost felt like private dining. The owner who was also maitre’d was a delight. He was genuine, knowledgeable and passionate about the food he was serving and where it came from. He was incredibly patient as we didn’t speak a lot of French. For such a small team (of 2 I think?) it was a faultless experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting Lyon. Do NOT be put off by the touristy restaurants and cafes in the square below. We had the €57 tasting menu and it was a total heaven.

The most amazing dining adventure ever! Certainly not an ordinary entrance or path to this incredible hidden gem. The owner Guillaume has created a uniquely fabulous restaurant serving meals which rival the best tasting menus we’ve ever enjoyed. The caviar to start was delightful… and the cod was excellent. The foie gras may have been the best I’ve ever had. It certainly was the highlight of the meal for me. The Mediterranean tuna belly was great… and the veal was also superb. All of this was followed by a chocolate and ice cream dessert combo which was equally unique and pleasing. Guillaume explained every aspect of the meal to us… and the history of the building… and much more. Absolutely fabulous… and an incredible value too! We highly recommend!

This little restaurant on the 2nd floor is a great place to have lunch or dinner. The food was delicious and made with quality products. The manager was very welcoming and gave plenty of information about the dishes and the history of the place. The dishes were delicious from starter to dessert and very well presented. The chef pays attention to details. We recommend the tasting menu.

Stately, elegant, and exquisitely gourmet, this restaurant is a tiny jewel hidden in the middle of Lyon. The food, prepared with great care, is a delicately balanced symphony of flavor, texture, and appearance. The room is beautiful and spacious, with paneled walls and luxurious linens. Service is provided by a single graceful waiter who is dedicated to the food and his audience. Don’t miss it.

The service and ambiance was very nice. The food was good, especially the starters and the dessert. The main course was not tasteful and it was below expectations. Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant and we enjoyed our dinner.
