Two starters and two fish-based dishes, one better than the other...the baccalhau was stunning, the dogfish "porridge" delicious... Mother and daughter are perfect hosts. For us it is high cuisine in a family-run restaurant, a memorable dinner.

The food is really good, as the service and the atmosphere. There is an amazing view on the city, for which I recommend to come for lunch.

We simply loved it here for a quiet family lunch. We all found something delicious to enjoy, with different dietary needs.

Always good. Maybe slightly underseasoned (salt) and the chanfana stew could have used a little more wine in the stewing. Reasonably priced and a great mellow no-frills dinner.

We stopped in Coimbra for lunch, already very hungry, so we started looking for a nice place to eat. We ended up in Maria Rio, and it was a very good surprise. With a cosy ambience and very nice Portuguese dishes, full of flavor. The staff very attentious and the food was very tasty.

A perfect example of Portuguese food in a beautifully crafted old-style space. Popped in with a friend who had never eaten Portuguese food before and Maria Rio did not disappoint!

Recommended by our host. Easily the best meal experience we had in Coimbra. Felt like we were having food prepared in a family kitchen. FOOD: 5.0. Chose 3 petisco dishes for two: - 5.0: Octopus salad. Outstanding. Not only was the octopus excellent, but we finally were able to have robust peppery arugula in Portugal. - 4.5: Dogfish with (I think) polenta and soft egg - 4.0: Legumes à Brás WINE: 3.5: House green wine. Pleasant on a summer evening. DESSERT food and drinks: - 5.0: Premiado à Rio: portion was quite large. Local specialty dessert that hit the spot on a summer evening. Not too sweet. Heavenly. - 5.0: Amarginha: Local almond liqueur, on ice. Wonderfully refreshing, and not too sweet. Also heavenly. - 4.0: Tawny Port. AMBIANCE: 5.0. Simple and intimate, with open door looking out over river. Very comfortable. SERVICE: 5.0. Amiable and very considerate. And -- unlike many restaurants in Portugal -- in reaction to our US credit card, the credit card machine did not present the two-trick-questions designed to earn the restaurant a commission by doing a disadvantageous (to us) exchange rate to dollars; rather, it simply charged us in EURO.

Great hidden gem with wonderful hillside view outside the door. Delicious food and intimate ambience. Make sure to put in a reservation if possible to guarantee a table since it is a small restaurant. We were able to make a dinner reservation for 3 for same day just a few hours before. Got the cod, pork cheeks, octopus salad and tomato soup which were all delicious. Would definitely come again.

This restaurant was a great find. Small establishment with a small and well priced menu. The food was excellent as was the service. They offer a few vegetarian options. We would definitely go back our next time in town.

I cannot judge about the food. I reserves a table and the reservation was accepted. When I arrived they indicated me the table were the people currently sitting there were about to pay and asked me to wait for ten minutes. After 15 minutes and preparing the table they then told me that they would give the table to someone else. Incredible.

I made a last minute reservation for dinner after looking thru a few options. I had passed by the restaurant during the day and it looked cozy and inviting. The menu is not large, which I actually prefer. I was dining alone and the waiter said that they could make a cheese plate for one since the one on the menu is for two people. Ambience was good. The breaded calamari were the best I have had!
