I seldom if ever write a review. Sadly, and admittedly, folks tend to do so when it is an exceptionally great experience or absolutely disappointing. Unfortunately, Piccolo Lago is amongst the most grossly disappointing restaurants in my more than 20 years of Michelin experiences. Truth. View and atmosphere amongst the best I’ve seen. Service, above average, but not stellar. Food…seriously, the most exaggerated nonsense ever. Terrible. Overrated. Not even close to a Michelin experience. We didn’t eat anything but the bread…and we are VETERANS of courses meals. Huge miss. Hugely disappointing. Regrettably, a wasted night.

Just crazy. The starter pasta was inferior to that from Antico Osteria in Intra, and to follow that we ordered the "lamb chop" as written on the menu in English. When we asked for it medium rare we were met with a stare, 'we can't do that'. Well, the portion arrived, I think 60 euros, and it was a 1 mm micro thin slice of crust burnt lamb, with gelatin on top, small mounds of apricot, with mini mint leaves on them. Someone forgot the chop. Lastly, after two of us were served three bottles of still water, and at the end of the meal, a fourth (750 ml) bottle arrived without being requested. Truly a disappointment all the way around, not to e repeated.

Went with the prix fixe menu. Service was excellent and staff were very attentive. The restaurant was empty. Only my wife and myself and one other couple in a large restaurant. Seemed very odd that the restaurant was nearly entirely empty. The food is prepared with great care. The problem was the marrying of the flavors. The combinations of the food and the flavor of the individual parts did not equal an enjoyable entirety. For instance, the polenta bread was very poor and both my wife and I hardly touched it. It was like grain tree bark. The cost for both of us was quite high (over $500) and we are accustomed to much better Michelin food flavor for this price. Again, the ambiance, service and presentation were top notch. But, the flavor of the food for the cost was disappointing.

Wonderful experience. The view of the lake was only surpassed by the creativity and taste of the meal. A must stop while at Lago Maggiore region

We were very impressed with the restaurant from the moment we sat down at the corner table facing Mergozzo. What an incredible vista. The staff was always attentive, but not overly so, and their help with menu selection was key. We both went with their homage to dishes that had been created over past decades, and they easily obliged when my wife wanted to substitute for the eel, to which she has an aversion. They had us from the first plate, which was a smoked trout with excellent consistency, very interesting tastes, and a gorgeous presentation. I can’t go over all of the dishes, but will mention that highlights include the sauces surrounding the local cheese flan, the tenderness of the scampi, the flavour combinations with the eel (and its perfect cooking), as well as the character of the kid and it’s eggnog accompaniment. The only issue we had was with the chef’s surprise, which was a pasta served before the kid. We we’re having some difficulty getting through the quantity of food, so the pasta was too heavy for our liking. But the quality of everything was beyond reproach. We started with a champagne cocktail, and had two glasses of wine each to pair with the food. The sommelier did an excellent job of matching wines for us. Again, thank you to the very helpful and personable staff.

Fantastic view. Sitting literally over the lake with the mountain view. Food innovative with a cacophony of flavors and textures and sights. Flexible enough to allow different degustation menus to be ordered by each diner. Great wine list with emphasis on Piedmontese wines. Unforgettable experience! Well worth the small detour

We had a wonderful night at this restaurant. The quality and kindness of the stuff was very remarkable. The food was very creative, well presented and delicious. The only problem was the baby that came to the next table. This should not have been allowed. We did not go there to hear the baby whining.
