Lovely, cozy location. It was interesting to be in the midst of the pottery studio, and to see the products they use on every table. However, I found our food to be only just OK. Worth a trip for the atmosphere, though.

Some meals are just meals, and others become memories. Lunch at Refeitro da Baixa was a 10/10 experience. Housed in a pottery shop dating back to the 1800s, we had the rare privilege of sitting inside the old kiln — a stunning mix of history and ambience. The executive lunch menu was already excellent, but adding the wagyu tartare was the highlight: rich, layered, and unforgettable. Each course was beautifully prepared, paired with fresh bread, wine, and flawless service that struck the perfect balance of attentive and warm. What stood out most was how the space itself tells a story — a bridge between past and present, rustic charm and modern flavors. Refeitro da Baixa isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience, a reminder of why Portugal continues to be a world-class culinary destination. Definitely the best meal we had in Portugal in 2 weeks of traveling around. The restaurant is beautiful and has a very unique setting due to the ceramic lab within it. Service was friendly and attentive. The steak was simply delicious and the rice with duck an incredible combination of flavors. If you’re in Coimbra you can’t miss it!

Excellent service and setting. The background music is super soft and the atmosphere is really quiet. There are no TV's or other noises annoying you. The staff was super nice and attentive. The food was delicious too, although the portions were smaller than what I would like, and considering the price of the desserts, they were a little disappointing. But our experience at Refeitro da Baixa was still amazing, we recommend it!

It was so memorable to sit and enjoy our lunch while watching the potters/ceramicists at work next door. The food was also excellent — we both had vegetarian dishes. We were also grateful to our server who was no tv patient and expedient when we let her know we had to have a rather quick lunch because we needed to get to the train station on time.

Ambiance was amazing! We loved seeing into the ceramics studio and all of the hand made dishes. The cocktails were also great and very affordable. The biggest issue we had was with the main courses. The swordfish came out rubbery and overcooked and the dry aged steak, which we paid extra for on Valentine’s Day came out blood red undercooked and very tough. It was one of the worst prepared steaks we have had really ever. In addition our 3 y/o son was not served a drink or a plate and really not considered as part of the meal. Lastly it took us about 30 min of tries to get the staff to bring a bill so we could leave. Not quite the valentines meal I had planned for our family unfortunately.

Semi-regular visitors to Refeitro, and it's normally excellent. I had the hake and it was very good. However my wife had the pigs cheeks (bochechas) and that was very disappointing. The meat was almost tasteless, and had strange accompaniments of very fine cut "chips" and leak. Normally very good menu and service, so suggest removing that item. The room was a little cold too, and when the fire went out no-one re-kindled it. ??

Amazing food (tartare and steak were particularly good) and ok service (limited use of english by some of the staff). Great atmosphere and OK prices. Overall, thanks to the food, I would say great experience! I will definitely come back in case I pass by!

This is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Coimbra, a former ceramics factory with stunning brickwork from the kilns and contemporary architecture. The new ceramics atelier is now next door and can be seen through massive glass walls. All the lovely dishware used is from the atelier. The staff were wonderful, caring and accommodating . We had good input on food, and lengthy wine suggestions from the sommelier. Our dinner was quite tasty, the octopus starter and squid and swordfish entrees were a fresh interpretation of Portuguese cuisine. The photos online do not do justice to this lovely restaurant!
