+2My wife and I were looking for someplace new to dine, not too far from our home in Spello. I have come to rely on rankings and reviews in The Fork App.. One reviewer wrote that it was ‘a winding and up and down trip through the hills to get there but well worth the effort.’ We now wholeheartedly agree. We enjoyed a delicious dinner in a quiet setting considering it was a Saturday night. The food, presentation, service and ambiance all ranked as excellent. We plan to return soon for lunch, both for more of the same and for a chance to explore the cute little town in daylight.

Cosy atmosphere and friendly atmosphere. Excellent risotto! Well done!

The staff were welcoming and professional. They were attentive without being intrusive. The starter was huge and would have been plenty for two or three people. The main course was large as well and we were unable to finish the meal. This menu is not your typical Italian fare.

Incredibly gorgeous restaurant with impeccably cooked and presented cuisine. Highly recommend the fat ox heart starter.

After winding, small roads leading up and up, we found Gualdo Cattaneo and the restaurant. It was well worth the exciting trip! Both the food and service are marvelous. Cooking the many meats on a roaring fire produced delicious, flavorful, tender results and the rest of the considerable menu was equally yummy. This is certainly a special, excellent restaurant.

Amazing culinary experience. The wait staff was perfect and welcoming from the moment we walked in - and watching the chefs prepare our meals was a special treat in itself. The food and plating / presentation were just sublime, from appetizers to dessert. The wine pairing recommendations, spot on. My beef filet with local black truffles may be one of the best steaks I have ever had, definitely in Italy. This was so worth the 35-minute drive through twisty and narrow back streets from Assisi where we are staying, we are only sorry we didn't try it sooner so we could come back at least once more. Absolutely do not miss Il Grottino if you are in the area. If driving, upon entering Gualdo Cattaneo leave your car in the parking spots at the bottom of the hill and walk up the street to the restaurant, rather than driving to it. Streets get uncomfortably narrow in spots.

This was a second outing to Il Grottino. Both times, the food, wine, and service have been excellent across the board. The tartare sampler is particularly good. The outdoor dining terrace is charming and comfortable. Highly recommended.

It is an excellent place in every possible aspect. We've been around in comparable restaurants and been at Il Grottino twice. We have concluded it is probably the best place in the area.

An intimate place with a small glazed upper terrace, in the middle of a beautiful medieval square. We didn't order much but each of the dishes we got was tasty and thoughtful. English speaking service, very helpful. we come back here for more. So far so exellent.

What a great find! We took a chance as we hadn’t heard of it and went on the Fork reviews; food looked and tasted amazing, friendly, enthusiastic and efficient young service team. Lively, atmosphere on the glassed in terrace - ideal for a spring day. Setting in this unknown mediaeval hilltop village was lovely. Inside dining room looked well appointed but was rather warm with the open fired oven. We are an hour away but it is well worth the journey and we look forward to returning.
