I was shocked when I checked my records and realized it was 10 years since I'd last eaten here. It's a delightfully ornate room in a premier area of Madrid, so the the food would only have to pass muster, but in fact was excellent. Top class ham with a simple but amazing tomato puree and toasted bread - heaven. By the numbers sliced steak with salt, another Spanish classic. The house Rioja by the glass was impeccable. And not too expensive a bill at the end. I must re-visit in a lot less than another 10 years!

The diner Tapas Menu was delicious and plentiful! We were very pleasantly surprised! Excellent ambiance! We sat outside and admired the Palacio Real and lovely plaza by the Opera, as well. Not noisy, which is a plus anywhere when you are dining outdoors. Inside the restaurant, where I have been on other occasions is a lovely old world ambiance. Great friendly service, as well. I highly recommend it!

Nos ha gustado mucho. La comida es excelente. Comenzamos con una ensalada de tomate ecológico acompañado de ventresca y cebolla, riquísima. Continuamos con unas albóndigas de pescado, muy bien elaboradas. No tuvimos que esperar. Nos sirvió Álvaro, amabilísimo y encantador, nos aconsejó con unos de los postres, las torrijas, que no pensábamos comer y que estaban espectaculares. Muchas gracias, Álvaro.

We travel often where there is a language barrier. Most everyone has always been friendly and made their best effort to communicate effectively. Not here. They had zero patience with us. Since we had the language barrier, we pointed to each item on the menu we requested..they repeatedly brought us the wrong items. When we told them, they were rude and reluctantly accommodated our our requests. The greeter was very pleasant and the location was amazing. I would not recommend this restaurant.

El Café de Oriente es un sitio muy especial. El entorno es espectacular, el restaurante precioso y la atención sobresaliente. Cuidan de todos los detalles con una amabilidad exquisita que hacen que la velada sea perfecta. Nosotros celebramos un evento familiar y cenamos en la parte de abajo que es un gran salón abovedado que formó parte de un antiguo convento. Tanto los entrantes como los platos principales y los postres nos encantaron. Además tuvieron mucho cuidado con el gluten ya que uno de los asistentes era celiaco. Un 10 tanto al maître como a todos los camareros. Después de cenar tuvimos la oportunidad de tomarnos el café en la parte de arriba del restaurante mientras disfrutábamos de un concierto de jazz simplemente espectacular. Una noche perfecta! Muchas gracias al Café de Oriente por hacerla posible.

Food and location were great although they were let down by extremely poor service for this price range. We waited 15 minutes to see the menu while the waiter clearly ignored us. Food arrived reasonably quickly but we didn’t see the wine until half way through our meal at which point I complained to the waiter. He poured the wine without a word and brought the bread which was meant to be served before the main course. No apologies from anyone, I recommend saving money and eating elsewhere in hopes of a better service.

Lovely location opposite the palace so perfect end to our tour . Worried it might be a tourist trap but really nice meal at a fair price and drinks very reasonable too. Would go again .
