Ambience was super. Service generally was ok, nothing special, but particularly fell short when there was a problem in the kitchen with one of our principal courses, and no one alerted us until we inquired why it was taking so long. While the cuisine was inventive, we did not care for many of the flavors. Having had a spectacular meal at AM the previous night, this was very disappointing.

This was the most disappointing experience at a Michelin starred restaurant, at any star level, that I’ve ever had (note: I’ve eaten at dozens of M* restaurants around the world, including 9 different 3 stars). Our experience was so bad it’s actually making me question the fidelity of the Michelin rating system overall. The menu is very, very fish forward. In fact, all dishes (on this particular menu) revolve around seafood dishes from the area. Counterintuitively, the WORST part of every plate was the fish. All other ingredients were beautifully selected, prepared and presented, but the fish was either flavorless or unpleasantly pungent (“fishy” one might say). Usually when I leave a three star I am uncomfortably full; this time I was hungry. We spent the 10 days prior to this dinner eating a Michelin * restaurants in the area eating ALL THESE SAME fish and loved them, so it is mind blowing how at this restaurant all the fish we cherished in the days before were so bad.

Chef Passedat is a remarkable master in preparing seafood. Every dish is a gift for the senses and a true rendition to French haut-cuisine in its most wonderful format. If this wouldn’t be enough, service is impeccable and the place itself makes room for one of the most beautiful restaurant views in the world ! In summary: a once in a lifetime gastronomic experience ! Congratulations !

The view is the best part of the restaurant. 180 degrees view to the ocean. Two things I recommend you to do while making your reservation. 1. Ask for a table close to the window. Otherwise you can take the risk to sit in the middle of the restaurant with parcial view like me and pay the same price as the others. 2. When you arrive ask for the menu with prices. Because they gave me one without prices.

Un-World Food (or the mother of all bouillabaisse) Le petit Nice, ça se mérite. First, there is the hassle of finding a parking space (and then the worry of leaving your car on an unsecured street of Marseille -better having a “13” license plate). Second, you have to find and enter Le Petit Nice compound (a gated community with an automatic portal, like the Sao Paulo mansions -and you will keep hearing the noise of airplanes and helicopters circling around during the evening). Third, there is the beautiful view over with the distant Montagne de l’Aigle and Ile Maire, which you get as replicas on your table, but you know that what lays before you is a multicultural but often poor and violent metropolis, and that you are seating in a secluded ghetto where you cannot help feeling some discomfort (while hearing the shouting of kids playing on the rocks underneath the terrasse). Fourth, there is the brigade, a well trained and disciplined crew, but very serious about its business, and a bit mechanical in its greetings and descriptions of the dishes (or maybe it was stress or weariness about the unusual circumstances). Then, the show begins… What is striking from the very first amuse-bouches is the distinctive character and personality of the Chef. This does not look and taste like anything you ever had. It has its own music and palette, it does not try to imitate any model and if there are some classical inspirations, it is always re-interpreted in the Chef’s style and manner. “Un-world food” as the antithesis of comforting “world food” you can get any place on the planet and which always tastes the same. At Le Petit Nice, everything comes with a twist, but it is never gratuitous, it is part of the big picture that progressively comes together with every dish. We chose My Bouille Abaisse menu. The starters include a fish soup, whose ingredients are in a tea bag and which turns blue like the Mediterranean sea in front of you, supposedly to iodize your palate. The first stage is a shell fish carpaccio, very thinly sliced, it almost feels liquid and you barely need to chew its delicate texture. The second stage is a light prelude to what is to come: 4 pieces of fish with subtle differences in texture and taste in a saffron bouillon. Next comes the main dish: three simple pieces of Saint Pierre, Lotte and Maigre, served on a plate with a few holes that rests on a container filled with water and seaweed to keep them warm. And, as a side dish, a bowl of bouillabaisse. From the look, nothing special, it could be any fish soup. But then, you taste it, and it is a passageway to a different world, like the secret doors or staircases in Murakimi’s novels. Rich, complex, a whole universe of its own. It awakes taste buds you did not know you had. It brings you back childhood memories, although your grandma never made bouillabaisse, but you whish she had so that this one could reminisce you of it. And you suddenly feel sad because you realize you may never again live such experience. What is the secret? The waiter says it’s the favouille rock crabs. But it must be something in the DNA of the Passedat family, handed over from generation to generation. And Marseille looks beautiful in the sunset, rich of its 2600 years history, and you feel a privileged guest to be part of it. The shiso leave sorbet and aloe vera espuma wake you up and bring you back to mother earth. Follow a fantasy around peach and saffron (with one of the custards looking like the rouille you did not need for the bouillabaisse) and a red apple trompe-l’oeil filled with red berry mousse to ensure a smooth landing. The wine pairing was all in the understatement, matched to the most salient part of every dish, but always a note or too below so that it would never overpower the composition. The bill was astronomical, but what do you expect when shooting for the stars? At the end, you exit the compound through the automatic door and you are plunged again in your everyday life, you find your car unharmed -the Monte-Cristo ghost must have protected you, and you drive home, anxiously trying to hardwire in your synapses the already fleeting taste of this otherwordly fish soup…

I have been to a number of 3 stars, this one is fabulous, does an excellent job of showing off the bounty of wonderful things from Provence and the Mediterranean. Only complaint, there is just too much wonderful food! The menu boulibase was fabulous but had to give up at the end.

Good views, excellent food, good suggestion for wine pairing and complex tastes which refresh my taste bud! Definitely will come back again. It is one of the few Michelin restaurants with the theme focusing on “le mer”. The only spotlight for my visit in Marseilles. Merci beaucoup.
