Dear Elisabeth, It seems clear to me that from your review you do not know Italian recipes. The carbonara has pepper. I have absolutely no idea what type of carbonara you are used to eating. From the almost 1800 customers whose reviews you can read, most of them give us a 9 or 10, the average rating is 9.3 and they are Italian customers, so I think the problem is in your taste which is a respectable rating but absolutely subjective. I advise you to eat in tourist restaurants and not traditional ones probably more in line with your desired tastes. Regards

10/10It was our anniversary and we were given the best table in the house. The staff were friendly and professional. The food was delicious. The restaurant it’s very romantic. Definitely recommend.

10/10The experience at Fanfaluch was so great! The food is amazing - no lie! We have visited different restaurants before in Italy- but I can say the standard here is high! Not too heavy, everything is perfect. The Tiramisu at the end- made the whole visit even better!

9.5/10When I arrived, it immediately became clear they had taken note of my request for a ‘high’ bar table, which I really appreciated. Service was excellent. For my liking, the tasting platter with three different beef tartars (truffels, cheese and the third one with coffee) was 1 out of 3 - the first two were quite bland, only the one with coffee stood out and was excellent. Slow-braised beef cheeks were amazing and accompanying wines very good. Although it got very busy, service remained very good, attentive and friendly. On the spot, I made a reservation for next week.

9.5/10My wife and I had a splendid time this evening dining at Fanfaluch, a restaurant in Piazza Vittorio — we’ve sometimes walked past them various times and tonight we gave them a try, and we’re so glad we did. To start off with, the service was optimal from the get-go. When we arrived they had elegant tables set outdoors in the Piazza but I asked about dining inside. Paolo said that we could if we’d like but said the tables inside were high-tops and not quite as comfortable for dining as opposed to simply sitting for drinks. So my bride and I sat at a nicely prepared table at the corner of the building. The table setting with cutlery in gold makes a nice first impression. And a nice amuse-bouche of raw meat topped with a small crisp of Parmigiano certainly showed promise for a nice meal. The menu is certainly not just the typical fare, there were a number of choices and combinations that captured our attention. My wife selected a tagliata focused on fish, with Bresaola of Tuna, Prosciutto of Swordfish and Smoked Salmon. I chose to try the Pizza Margherita al Cucchiaio (it’s called a pizza and looks like one at a glance) but it’s a dish you eat with a spoon. Tomatoes and Burrata atop a cream of Pane all’Inglese (English bread pudding?). The quality and freshness of my wife’s seafood selection was excellent, and it was also a very abundant platter. My “pizza” was really interesting and very tasty, and the Burrata was a very flavorful one. The experience of eating it with a spoon tickled my fancy too. We had a pair of nice glasses of red wine to accompany the meal, my bride selected a Nebbiolo and I a Ruchè. Both quite nice. Both Paolo in taking orders and describing dishes to us as well as the young server bringing the wine, water and plates to our table were both attentive and refined in how everything was handled. No matter how good then food at a restaurant is, if the service doesn’t show the proper attention the evening never seems as special. And I can say that here they certainly provided excellent service. After we’d finished these two dishes, neither my bride nor I were in the mood for a primo or a secondo. Our eyes went to the dessert section of the menu and we noticed a couple of offerings that were quite unusual. One was called an Insalata Caprese, which is something you might typically find as an antipasto or in the salads. On the Fanfaluch menu it was as a dessert, featuring a purée of tomato along with puffs of Burrata topped with a basil infused powdered sugar. (!) The other dessert that jumped off the page was a Finta (meaning “fake”) Carbonara. It featured Zabaglione with powdered cacao and some Guanciale (pork cheek). Yes, sweet and salty in the same dish. I can honestly say we’ve never seen dishes like those on any menu so we had to give them both a try! What a treat! The “Insalata Caprese” was served in a form meant to look like a tomato! Paolo confessed that the chef wasn’t thrilled as often it looks even rounder but with the heat it didn’t quite hold its form as well as sometimes — but even so it looked great. As my wife and I tasted it, we were struck that it didn’t come across as a dessert, you could imagine it being served as an appetizer since the flavor of the tomato and the puffs of Burrata were slightly salty rather than sweet. We even mentioned that to Paolo and he said there had been some debate as to where on the menu to place it. The taste was quite nice. The ”Carbonara” was served in a Whisky glass and looked great, the Zabaglione mimicked the color of egg in a traditional Carbonara (a dish I enjoy making as well as eating), and the Guanciale rasher sticking out of the top was perfectly crisp. Quite an appearance and the tastes were splendid. So much fun to find and dine at a spot where the chef plays with recipes and new presentations — and when they go outside the lines it’s something you’ve got to try! Finishing up neither my wife nor I were in the mood for a caffè but I mentioned to Paolo I might be interested in an Amaro. He remarked that based on what we’d ordered he wanted to come up with something out of the ordinary. I asked him for which Amaro they might have that isn’t one of the more frequently found brands and he suggested Jefferson (one I have seen while shopping for my home bar but have never actually tried). I drank it without ice to get the full flavor and it had a nice woody undertone at both the start and finish. Plus a very rich texture. A perfect way to cap things off. When I went in to pay the check, Paolo and I had a nice quick chat where I complimented the service (and we agreed about how important it is to a dining experience no matter how good the food). I also made sure he heard how the young server had also handled everything quite elegantly. I again complimented the chef and all of them for the great choices and he let me know he hopes we’ll be back. This spot is a cut above so many others. It isn’t just a place that says we do the standard Italian food better than everyone else — their aim seems to be offering things that aren’t what you’ll find offered all over town, and then backing it up by doing it quite well.
