I really didn't want to leave a bad review because we had high hopes and the restaurant shows a lot of effort in terms of decoration. The problems for us were the quality of the food and the fact that the manager was not treating his staff very well. It was difficult to witness so much micromanagement from a customer perspective and the food was very bland and inedible. We paid but didn't eat, which was a really unfortunate for us. We took a takeaway container, which leaked so we had to throw it away at Central Station on our way home and it leaked all ove my bag. The taste of food reflects the love, joy and hard work put into it and I don't think that's happening at the restaurant. On the positive side the male waiter with dark hair in a pony tail was lovely and smiled throughout. His positivity was the only highlight. Hope things improve there.
Viva AfrikaSad to read a bad revieuw like this. Im sorry that we dissapoint you. We hardly get bad revieuws about our food and to read that we dont do it with love is your oppinion without knowing what we have been doing for the past 23 years. When you dont like something in our restaurant you can let us know and we will always work something out. I guess our taste is to your taste. we will take note of your bad revieuw en keep improving as we always do.

Always amazing food. The portion of kitfo was smaller than I knew it to be from the numerous previous times I ate it. After ordering a 2nd kitfo to take home, I noticed they used the larger bowl that they usually use, so they acknowledged the issue and even overfilled it on the 2nd go.
Viva AfrikaThank you for the review!

It was our first time trying African food and here was absolutely one of the best choices! We ordered the surprise plate for 2 people, which you can try different classic African dishes - perfect for the first try! The atmosphere is also cozy. You can tell the owner made many efforts on it. Overall it was a 💯 experience!!!

Lovely staff. Service was great. The restaurant is beautiful. The food was nice but not amazing. I am a celiac and the day after my meal I felt unwell. I am still unwell. I am pretty sure that my food was not 100% gluten free. The effects of this are serious and long-lasting, so I ask that the chef pay more attention to ensuring that the food is safe for celiacs to eat.

Came here for Christmas dinner. Usually my partner and I eat in but we love trying new things and we chose Viva Afrika. We got the platter for 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. And the restaurant itself was beautiful the minute we walked in. 10/10 spot for sure!

Absolutely delicious food! Loved all of it! Unfortunately, the service was very slow (restaurant was not even full) and it seemed as they were treating the Dutch speaking customers better than non-Dutch speaking…but again, really good food and big quantities too!

Viva Afrika offers a wide selection of dishes from Africa, it has a casual and colorful atmosphere and good service. We stopped by for a chill dinner for 2; tried the jollof rice and pagasisus dish (assa-kelwa), both were quite flavorful, except for the side salads which were dull and unseasoned. Assa kelwa is served with the enjera bread, a sour flatbread, that resembles a pancake and it's nice if you're into sour tastes, I personally love it. For dessert, we had the tjakrie and baked bananas, and I think the tjakrie was the highlight of the night for me. It was delicious and not too sweet, like a "down to earth" rice pudding. In general, they have decent portions, and the food is good value in general. We were satisfied with the service, our food arrived quickly and the staff was helpful. I skipped the beers and went for a wine, and I was pleasantly surprised by it, they have a decent selection of wines from both South Africa and France. But do try out their specialty African beers if you haven't had them before. Would recommend if you want to try out African cuisine in Rotterdam.
