4/10WARNING!! Tables are very close to each other. There was a lot of noise and anxiety created by the wait staff who didn’t seem to care about the diners. Slamming plates down on tables and when clearing and resetting tables. I felt the food was under seasoned and made with no love. Service was pushed. A small dish of olives and a complimentary small bowl of “beans”? I ordered the pulpo and i couldn’t cut it with a steak knife. I saw many other diners around who were also frustrated. The whole experience left me stressed out. Will never return.

6/10The service was problematic. We had to beg for bread. My wife asked for aqua con gas, but the waiter kept trying give her still water…,but we were charged for it on the bill! Salad was fantastic, but the octopus and potatoes were seriously over salted(and we like salt). The shrimp were supposed to be very spicy,,,, but we’re not. Fish soup was very good. The overhead lights kept going on and off. Very very odd. Look, this is a place for old Tourists… plain and simple. That’s why you can get a reservation the same day.

9.5/10Great atmosphere and good choice of fish and seafood also quality meat. Very good selection of different wines and nice feature that you can buy wines to take home. Went there twice during eastern holiday and both visits was excellent!

9/10. It’s only studying the menu and little clues like the identical complimentary cake that I realised it’s part of the Oter group. Individual but only up to a point. But the food is very good and by no means formulaic

10/10My hotel concierge recommended this restaurant. When I got there, I was told that the restaurant was full, but I was offered a seat at the bar. Although I had some dietary restrictions, they were very attentive to my needs. Even though I did not speak Spanish, I used the translator on my phone to write what I wanted, the waiter read it and was able to translate it to the kitchen. The kitchen did a great job. When the food came out, it was wonderful. The service was cheerful and friendly. I returned two evenings later to the same restaurant. This time, I booked a table, and the service was excellent again. I met with the waiter who served me the first evening and he remembered who I was. I was greeted very warmly, and my food came out without me even having to order anything as he remembered what I had the previous evening. the food was excellent, and I had a nice time. If I ever go back to Madrid, El Barril de las Letras would be the first restaurant I would go to.

2/10We have dined at the restaurant every time we visit Madrid and the experience has been great. Sadly this time the experience was horrible. We had a reservation and upon arriving were shown a table by the bar and next to a seafood stand where you could smell the seafood. Next to the table was a trash can. The table itself was not setup. Upon asking to be moved to another table, we were informed it was not possible. I would rather the restaurant not take the reservation than to give an awful table. Definitely spoiled our New Year’s Eve dining. The staff was not helpful and the manager was rude.

5.5/10I'll start with two positives. The deserts we had (cheesecake and crepes) were excellent, as was the coffee. That is the only positive feedback I have. The reviews for this seafood restaurant were generally very good, so I was expecting very good things. Initial impressions were poor however. We booked early for Saturday at 8.30pm. The Restaurant area was empty, but we were placed on a table right in front of the entrance door. We asked to move to another table, but were told the restaurant was fully booked (which later we saw it was, as it filled up over next two hours, but I still think they could have given us one of the better tables). So for two hours we had to sit eating uncomfortably as cold air blew in on us everytime the door opened. This set the tone for poor service and some of the mediocre and then awful food that was to follow., except the deserts which were excellent. Starters were croquettes which were meant to have prawn in them I think. For about €17 we got 6 tiny ones that had very little taste and were disappointing. We also had Octopus, a thick cut of leg, which was OK. I'd have liked it cooked a bit more but it was fine. The mains was rice and prawns, which was bland and had very little taste. The rice was stodgy. It all reminded me of something you'd buy frozen from a cheap supermarket to cook in a microwave. We tried to eat it, but it was just awful. We complained and we're offerred an alternative, but they didn't show the menu again. They just suggested steak or some fish dish. A supervisor then came over and had a lengthy conversation with my Spanish friend, saying we should have complained immediately rather than eating half the dish...as I say, we did try to eat it, but it was just horrible. This was another example of the impolite service. The garlic steak pieces came quickly. It wasn't good quality meat, it was tough and chewy. No one asked was it OK, or apologised for the poor food. The restaurant is very busy. I really don't know why. Maybe every dish we ordered was the wrong one, but every dish on the menu should be good. Meal was nearly €140 for wine and three courses, plus coffee. Pricey and not justified for mediocre quality food and poor service.

"El Barril is a classic, one of the most prestigious restaurants in Madrid in the Salamanca district. Now if you like its excellent product and love to get out of the center of the city, you have a new option with the same quality: El Barril de Las Letras.
Taking its name from the neighborhood in which it is located, El Barril de Las Letras is a modern venue, decorated with a vintage style where white predominates. In addition to its trademark prestige, is the menu in which quality fish and seafood prevail.
Venture to try a Denia red prawn, monkfish with black tripe, or the creamy rice pudding... you will be left fascinated and eager to go back, not to mention the charm of your environment. Reserve your table!"
