9/10Found this restaurant reported to be a typical lisboan taca serving traditional portguguese food . Situated about 20 min walking from Cais do Sondre area- well removed from the commercial area Went on a Sunday and had reservations for 9 pm. We were the sole diners in the restaurant, quite lovely with tilwd walls and wooden beams. The waiter was quite friendly- without asking he brought to the table bread/sliced hame and cheese plate. Difficult to refuse - we hadnt asked for these plates and wound up costing us about 15 Euro. Beer was great- only draft tap available. Had traditional clams in coriander sauce- quite delicious and bountiful! The main plates of bacalao ( migas) and breaded and fried octupus with rice were quite tasty but in portions that were excessive for single persons. I would recommend this place for traditional fare- maybe order one plate at a time as the portions were quite large. Overall pleasing experience and nice host. Unable to process american credit card- cash!

10/10The food was excellent, typical portuguese dishes… the staff was very nice and the atmosphere felt like a big family, with a lot of local guests. The chef is there for 43 years so he knows what he is doing :-) 100% recommend!

2/10Worst restaurant ever visited! Terrible food, awful place, very bad service. Awfully smelling pork chop, raw chicken, burnt sausages! And on top of that too expensive! We would never recommend it!

Tks for your comment. Probably you evaluated the wrong restaurant, since we don’t have chicken on our menu.

3/10Don't believe the good reviews. The food quality is less than average, especially for this price. Service was pretty bad too. And they charged us more on every item than the menu price. Pretty cheeky.

10/10Great food in a special, authentic Atmosphere in Madragoa, Lisbon. Very friendly service. Food was brought to the table after a few minutes only. Historical photos on the walls illustrate how important Portuguese politicians, writers and singers appreciated this place over the Years. I would return. Price is a maybe 10-20% higher than what I am used to, but still ok.

9/10Varina da Madragoa is in a lovely Lisbon neighbourhood that couldn't be any more traditional. This is reflected on the food and service inside the restaurant. We ate the 'pataniscas' and they were lovely, and the Blattertarte was also delicious. Would recommend for those who prefer typical Portuguese food over fine dining impersonal experiences.

10/10Very good! A true hidden Pearl in Portugal for good food and a feeling of “true” Portuguese culture. It’s definitely a go back, the food was fantastic and the people working there very nice

8/10This family run restaurant is a real gem of a find. Simple traditional cuisine. We tried to book a table for lunch today (Sunday 13/10), but their website said they were full. Fortunately, I had a look on thefork.pt which showed tables were available! Please double check if sites show no tables available, it would be a shame to miss out. Definitely one not to be missed.

6.5/10With such choice in Lisbon it’s hard to rate this any higher than average. Grilled fish was good but the bacalau and the grilled meat dishes were only ok. On a positive note it’s very affordable, the waiter was busy and we had to ask /remind him a number of times for drinks we had ordered.

7/10Amazing starters, clams and fried prawns were delicious. Scrambled eggs with portuguese sausage was a fun dish. The main courses were just average though, had high expectations for their bacalhau a bras but it didn’t turn out to be surprising, as well as the cod fritters where the breading was too thick to our liking. Service was good, waiter was attentive and the atmosphere really reflects the local portuguese vibes

9.5/10Varina da Madragoa is a nice small place. The restaurant had the feel of grandmas kitchen and very relaxed. We had the cod and pork chop. Pork chop is thin and has a mustard based sauce. Best pork chop we ever had. Cod was cooked really well. The potatoes were cooked with skin on and tasted like a buttery baked potato, which was splendid. Also, when going here get the sausage plate. Very delicious. The house white wine went well with the fish. Overall very good restaurant and would like to go back to try different things.
